This creek eventually reaches Cockle Bay, and is a quiet, relaxing place just outside Auckland. It is suitable for intermediate or expert kite surfers and windsurfers.
The beach is only small, but consists of decent sand and there are plenty of access points to enter the water easily. The creek is slightly inland, and away from the popular beaches, so you'll find few other people out here when you visit. The water temperature goes from about 14° C in winter to about 30° C in summer, and although a wetsuit might not be required then sun protection certainly is.
Spring is the best time to be here, with the wind is blowing from the west or the south-west at over 20 knots almost every day. If you happen to be around here in the winter, the afternoons can also give decent winds between 10 and 15 knots. The water is shallow and cloudy, and conditions are best at high tide with the surface usually flat but occasionally choppy if the wind is strong enough.
This is a quiet, undeveloped spot and there are no facilities at all here. You can park just a short distance away from the river, but there is no public transport to this area. The main part of Auckland however isn't very far away at all and has all the facilities you need.
You should wear boots here, as there are a lot of shells on the beach and you could easily cut your feet. There are no other hazards that you need to be aware of.
